Darkest Hour is a standalone strategy game based on the Hearts of Iron, covering the period 1914-1964. The game is connected with political, diplomatic, espionage, economic, military and technological aspects.

In Darkest Hour, the player will have to manage the state by waging wars, changing the country´s policy, making historical decisions, concluding agreements and conducting trade with other countries, studying technologies, specifying tasks for industry and conducting internal and external intelligence. The player can play as any country that existed from 1914 to 1945. In the scenario "The Great War" - from 1914 to 1918, there are two military-political alliances: the Entente and the Central Powers. In other scenarios, there are three alliances: Comintern, Axis and Allies. In 1933 only Germany was in the Axis, France, Great Britain and their colonies were allies, and the USSR, Tuva and Mongolia were in the Comintern. The game is divided into two versions - light (Light) and full (Full). Lightweight is more similar to Hearts of Iron 2 than full.
